What is a Hot Filling Machine?

A hot filling machine is equipment used to fill liquid or semi-liquid products into containers while they are still in a heated state. This process typically serves two main purposes: first, heating the product to melt it into a liquid to improve flowability; second, ensuring product sterility to extend shelf life. Hot filling machines are commonly used for fruit juices, sauces, butter, or certain types of honey that require heating for preservation. They are also widely used in the production of candles, lip balms, lipsticks, car waxes, petroleum products (e.g., greases), and some chemicals (e.g., adhesives).

Hot Filling Technology

RUIZHI has been specializing in manufacturing filling machines for over 15 years. We have concluded that hot filling technology is mainly divided into two application methods depending on whether the product is liquid or semi-solid.

1. Sterilization Hot Filling (for liquids)

This is the standard process for beverages, sauces, and similar food products. Its goal is to sterilize the liquid, achieving a long shelf life without the need for preservatives. The process uses an efficient “two-step combination method”: first, the liquid is sterilized at an extremely high temperature (typically 135°C to 150°C); then, it is filled into containers while still hot (85–96°C). As the product cools, a vacuum seal forms, locking in safety and freshness. This technology is widely used in bottled juices, iced teas, pasta sauces, and drinking yogurts. In the food industry, this is currently the most mainstream process, which we can refer to as “thermal sterilization filling.”

2. Hot-Melt Filling (for semi-solids)

This process is suitable for products that are solid at room temperature but must be melted during filling and packaging. By heating, the product is transformed into a viscous, easy-to-pour liquid. After filling into the final container (such as a lipstick tube or grease cartridge), it cools and returns to its familiar solid form. This is essential for lipsticks, antiperspirants, petroleum jelly, industrial greases, and solid balms. We can call this technology “melt-phase filling.”

Although these hot filling systems address different challenges, they both follow one non-negotiable requirement: extremely precise temperature control. Every step depends on maintaining the temperature exactly at the right level.

Construction Materials for Hot Filling Machines

Hot filling involves packaging liquids at high temperatures (typically between 60°C and 140°C). Therefore, materials that come into contact with the liquid must be carefully selected to ensure safety, durability, and hygiene. Npack rigorously chooses materials that not only comply with GMP and FDA standards but also remain durable under high-temperature conditions.

316L stainless steel is one of the most reliable and recommended materials in the food, beverage, and cosmetic industries. The surface treatment of liquid contact parts is equally important, such as electropolishing. For seals and gaskets, we typically select PTFE/PFA, FKM/Viton, or EPDM rubber, depending on the liquid and product characteristics. Ceramic pistons and valves are also a preferred option for cosmetic and pharmaceutical liquids.

Industry Applications of Hot Filling Machines

Hot filling machines are widely used in the packaging industry for products that require sterilization or are solid at room temperature. They are mainly applied in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

In the food industry, hot filling is particularly common for beverages and sauces—both for sterilization and to extend product shelf life.

In cosmetics, products such as lipsticks and lip glosses are typically filled in a hot-melt state to make filling easier, then cooled to return to their natural solid form.

Choosing a Hot Filling Machine

There are various types of hot filling equipment. Here we have selected several models based on filling technology. Regardless of the type, we can provide solutions to meet your hot filling needs.

For the filling of lipsticks, deodorants, and other cosmetic and personal care products, hot filling machines are among the best choices for cosmetic production. Whether handling lipstick wax bases or viscous deodorant melts, the key lies in precise temperature management.

Conclusion: The Integrated Future of Hot Filling Technology

At the heart of hot filling is the use of thermal energy to transform materials—whether to sterilize fruit juice or shape a lipstick. As products become increasingly complex and consumer demands more stringent, mastering these technologies will be key to staying competitive. Npack offers a wide range of filling equipment for your hot filling needs. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
