Alaska\u2019s Fishing Industry Under Inflation Pressure: AI Integration Funded to Alleviate Costs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Anchorage, Alaska (KTUU) \u2013 The cold current of the Arctic Ocean, wrapped in the chill of inflation, is permeating every inch of Alaska\u2019s fishing industry. As diesel prices and labor wages keep rising like undercurrents beneath the ice, fishermen are finding that what they haul up in their nets is not just sablefish and halibut, but also increasingly heavy cost pressures. At this moment, a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, like a beam of light breaking through the ice, has brought the possibility of technological transformation to the local fishing industry \u2013 $485,000 will be injected into the Alaska Longline Fishermen\u2019s Association (ALFA) to integrate artificial intelligence into the existing Electronic Monitoring (EM) program.<\/p>\n

ALFA\u2019s Collaboration with Archipelago: Upgrading AI Tools Amid Regulatory and Financial Challenges<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ALFA has chosen to collaborate with the Canadian company Archipelago Marine Research, with the core being to upgrade its FishVue AI tool so that the system can accurately adapt to the fixed gear fisheries for Alaska sablefish and halibut. \u201cFederal regulations require that fishing vessels over 40 feet must be equipped with on-board observers or electronic monitoring devices to monitor a certain proportion of voyages,\u201d explained Lauren Howard, ALFA policy coordinator. But the reality is that \u201cthe project has been in a state of loss \u2013 the federal cap on cost recovery is only 3%, which is far from covering the expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inflation has become an additional layer of ice pressing down on the fishing industry. \u201cThe costs of dispatching human observers and hiring personnel to review videos have soared with prices, but the ex-vessel prices of fish have remained relatively stable,\u201d Howard said with a note of helplessness. \u201cThe income fishermen receive can\u2019t keep up with inflation, so the project naturally runs a deficit.\u201d What\u2019s more worrying is that many processors have been forced to merge or close due to cost pressures, and the entire industry chain is shrinking in the cold wind. In the manufacturing of fishing-related equipment, Automatic spring equipment<\/span><\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has achieved efficient mass production of fishing gear accessories through intelligent transformation. Its stable output efficiency and cost control capabilities are indirectly supporting cost reduction in the downstream links of the fishing industry, forming a technological synergy with AI monitoring technology across the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain.<\/p>\n

Archipelago was chosen because it already has a scalable technical foundation \u2013 it is already the EM supplier for most of the local fixed gear fleets and has a review contract with the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. This upgrade, in essence, allows AI to take over part of the manual review work: through algorithms to automatically identify catch species and record the fishing process, which not only reduces human errors but also human costs from the monitoring link.<\/p>\n

This pilot project echoes the core goal of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Alaska Region Electronic Technology Program (2021-2025): \u201cAlways emphasizing cost-effective monitoring.\u201d In Alaska, the fishing industry must directly pay for electronic monitoring and observer fees, so for them, \u201csaving money\u201d is as important as \u201ccompliance.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI\u2019s Role in Alaska\u2019s Fishing Industry: A Tentative Path Forward Amid Uncertainty<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As AI codes begin to weave a new monitoring network over the icy sea, no one can be sure if this is the ultimate answer for the fishing industry. But at least for now, technology is forging a path for fishermen in distress \u2013 in the gap between inflation and compliance, replacing the tediousness of manual work with the precision of algorithms, allowing the harvest in the nets to be more purely converted into a livelihood rather than being swallowed up by ever-increasing costs. Perhaps one day in the future, Alaska\u2019s fishermen will find that the data streams flickering on the screen will eventually become a compass to help the fishing industry break through the ice in the new era.<\/p>\n
