Paris, June 12, 2025 – TotalEnergies and French AI pioneer Mistral AI announce a strategic partnership to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in support of the energy giant’s multi-energy transition, with a focus on integrating intelligent automation and industrial automation across its operations. The collaboration aims to leverage AI-driven solutions to enhance efficiency in low-carbon energy sectors, marking a pivotal step in merging cutting-edge technology with sustainable energy strategies.

A Joint Lab for AI-Driven Industrial Automation

Under the partnership, a shared AI innovation lab will be established, staffed by experts from both entities. Mistral AI will contribute its generative AI models and machine learning capabilities, while TotalEnergies will provide domain expertise in energy production—particularly in renewables, low-carbon hydrogen, and smart grids. The lab will focus on:

  • Developing an AI assistant for TotalEnergies’ 1,000 researchers, integrating intelligent automation to accelerate R&D in new energy technologies and reduce environmental impact.
  • Designing decision-support tools rooted in industrial automation to optimize performance of industrial assets, such as refineries and renewable energy plants, while lowering CO₂ emissions.
  • Implementing AI-powered solutions to enhance customer experiences, including energy-saving recommendations and smart grid management, supported by automation equipment for seamless data-driven operations.

The collaboration also emphasizes exploring AI infrastructure adoption to bolster Europe’s digital sovereignty, with a focus on deploying automation equipment that aligns with sustainable industrial practices.

AI as a Catalyst for Automation-Driven Transition

This deal underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to using digital technology—from intelligent automation to industrial automation frameworks—to transform its operations. Historically, the company has applied AI in earth science and predictive maintenance, but the partnership with Mistral AI expands this to new frontiers:

  • In renewable energy production, AI will optimize wind farm layouts and solar panel efficiency through real-time data analysis, supported by automation equipment for precision installation and maintenance.
  • In carbon capture systems, industrial automation solutions will enhance process control, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
  • The company’s Digital Factory, now in its fifth year, has already deployed over 60 AI solutions—from machine learning to generative AI—across its value chain, demonstrating the scale of its automation-driven ambition.
