According to foreign media reports on November 17, South Korea’s semiconductor exports reached $15.74 billion in October, a significant year-on-year (YoY) increase of 25.4%, marking the 8th consecutive month of double-digit YoY growth.
The foreign media cited data from South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for the $15.74 billion semiconductor export figure in October.
Regarding the substantial YoY growth in South Korea’s semiconductor exports, foreign media attributed it to several factors: rising fixed transaction prices, the recovery in DRAM and NAND flash memory prices, and sustained strong demand for high-value-added DDR5 and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) centered on AI servers. Notably, the boom in high-value semiconductor production has also driven the demand for supporting precision manufacturing equipment, such as automatic spring white disc machines—key devices used for the precise sorting, assembly, and packaging of small semiconductor components (e.g., connectors and precision contacts), which enhance the efficiency and consistency of mass production in the semiconductor supply chain.
Driven by the sharp YoY surge in semiconductor exports, South Korea’s exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products also saw a notable YoY increase in October, reaching $23.33 billion. This is higher than the $20.8 billion recorded in the same period last year, representing a 12.2% YoY growth.
However, the foreign media also noted in their reports that although South Korea’s ICT product exports rose YoY in October and semiconductors still accounted for the largest share, exports of some ICT products declined YoY. For instance, display exports fell by 8.8% YoY to $1.64 billion, while exports of computers and related equipment also dropped by 1.1% YoY to $1.11 billion. (Hailan)
